Red Hot Mittens for 2010 Winter Olympics
Who would have thought that the hottest item in the recently launched 2010 Canadian Olympic team apparel collection would be red mittens designed to match those of the Vancouver 2010 torchbearers?
At $10 per pair, the cozy knitted mittens with a white Canadian flag on the palm and the Vancouver 2010 logo on the back have been a huge hit to the surprise of even Mark Kinnin, The Bay’s vice president of Olympics global sourcing and e-retail who noted: “Everybody wants not one pair of red mittens, they want 10 pair of red mittens.”
Proceeds from sales of the mittens go to the Own the Podium 2010 program to support Canadian Olympic athletes.
LATEST RED MITTENS
If you want to experience Red Mittens nostalgia, visit redmittens.ca (note that the site takes a few minutes to load). You can register your mittens at the site and view Canadian athletes wearing the new Fall season red mittens. You can also purchase the new and improved mittens with an extra large maple leaf.
Olympic Mittens Fever
- Olympic Memorabilia: You can access VANOC memorabilia at vancouver2010.com/auction, which links to eBay and offers only “authenticated” items.
- Around 3.5 million pairs of red mittens have been sold: Branded Vancouver 2010 merchandise sales hit $500 million.
- Counterfeit Mittens: One of our readers let us know about counterfeit mittens that are being sold for $9.00. A counterfeit pair was recently found in a Gastown tourist shop in Vancouver that are almost identical to the real mittens. There’s just one visual difference: real 2010 mittens feature the Olympic rings, while fake ones do not.
- Red Mittens Flash Mob: Here’s a video of a hand-waving red mittens dance in Vancouver’s Robson Square.
- The Great Mitten Rush: Check out the mitten extravaganza in an editorial cartoon.

Why is it that the these gloves were made in China. If we wanted to show our Canadian pride should we not of had them made in Canada. For this reason i will not be buying any of the Olympic gloves or other clothing.

Agree wtih Nelis,
I was so disappointed that these gloves were made in China.
I was intended to get one to support Canada….but when I see they are made in China; immediately I threw them back to the bucket.
Also the other Olympic clothing are made in China too, and they are expensive.
what’s wrong with made in Canada??

That’s true; most of the Olympic apparel are made in China and pricey, still. But there a few of them made in Canada if you look around hard enough.

So dissappointed that I can’t even get any olympic $10.00 mitts, live in a rural area, so an hour from our nearest city, Zellers or Sears. Was told to call the store and ask to have them put away, no luck, it’s first come first serve, what the H…….. because we are out West we don’t get any, I can’t believe they tell you they have them but never do. Support the olympics!!!!!!!!! Can’t be bothered anymore, three trips to the store, in the last month, none when I call, forget it, the kids will get something else…….

I randomly found ‘em today & they are ADORABLE!
Super cute & soft.. & what a steal for $10!
& I’m really not into souvenirs.. & kinda don’t care about the olympics that much. But everyone complaining about where it was made.. get over it.

I bought these mitts, and they are very cute. There probably isn’t a firm in Canada that could produce so many of them, hence China.
Just buy them.

To the people that said they didn’t buy them because they were made in China… You guys are dumb, buy them anyway..regardless of where they were made, some of the proceeds go towards Canadian athletes. So because of your stupid protest, you deliberately didn’t contribute to the country you were hoping to support in the first place… Well done. Idiot

I guess those who won’t buy the mittens because they are made in China have a closet full of clothes and sox made in Canada? And, when you shop you “won’t buy it if it’s made in China”? And I suppose you are willing to pay double for them? Or are you just looking for an excuse to critisize?
