Work Out on an Empty Stomach to Burn More Fat

Skipping Breakfast May Not be so Bad

For years, the general wisdom has been that eating before exercising helps to speed up your metabolism and fuel your workout. According to recent studies, you may want to pass on breakfast if you want to burn fat.

The studies suggest that exercising when your body is low on food may be a good way to eliminate excess fat. If you don’t eat before exercising, your body doesn’t have carbohydrates in reserve. Since muscles usually get their energy from carbohydrates, this forces them to burn fat instead.

In a study published in the Sports & Exercise journal, researchers at the University of Birmingham assigned seven people to cycle three days a week and then work out intensely an hour later without eating. Another seven people followed the same exercise regime, but were not instructed to fast. The results showed that the members of the group that didn’t eat burned a higher proportion of fat to carbohydrates than the group that ate.[tweetmeme source= “blushstopshere” only_single=false]

There are downsides to postponing breakfast. Besides the difficulty of working out without sufficient energy, there is a possibility that you may overindulge in eggs, bacon, and hash browns after you finish your workout.
