Beauty Classics That Never Go Out of Style

11 Jul

Beauty Classics

Do you ever wonder why some beauty products stick around forever, while others just fade away?

Beauty products become best sellers when they work well whether you’re a celebrity, a hair or makeup professional, or a regular beauty junkie. Beauty products also create a loyal customer base when stocking up on them won’t break the bank.

Here are a few cult favorites I’ve come across.

L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hair Spray

This beauty classic is the hairspray of choice for professional stylists for runways and red carpets. It comes in many variations now from Extra Strong to Colour Treated.

When I want to lock in a hairstyle and make it last as I traverse the rainforest of Vancouver🙂, I always turn to Elnett (especially the travel size).

Nivea Creme

One of my sweetest childhood memories of my late mother was watching her carefully remove her makeup with Nivea Creme. This timeless beauty classic goes back even further with fans like Marilyn Monroe, who loved it because of its rich and creamy texture.

What’s interesting now is that Nivea is tapped as a dupe for one of the most expensive luxury creams in the world: Crème de la Mer.

Benefit High Beam Liquid Face Highlighter

Benefit’s High Beam Face Highlighter is the first highlighter I ever encountered. Until then, I was familiar with contouring but not using light to accent parts of the face.

IMHO, Benefit’s High Beam highlighter started the whole highlighting craze. Even with all the competition in the HAC market, this satiny pink liquid is still one of my favorites because a little goes a long way.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

Is it just me or is using Maybelline Great Lash Mascara a rite of beauty passage? I remember using this mascara (in blue) as a tween and sneaking out of the house so no one would notice🙂.

Now, I use the colorless version to seal my mascara and prevent flakes. For me, it comes in handy when I work on site (I’m a contract technical writer), and I’m unable to check my makeup all day.

London Drugs Annual Beauty Preview: #LDBeauty

16 Jun

LDBeauty_quad

Happy Thursday, beauties 💕.

Last night, I attended the annual London Drugs beauty event in Vancouver, which features upcoming beauty releases from prestige and drugstore beauty brands.

This was my first time attending the #LDBeauty event and I was so excited (and honored) to join dozens of local media and beauty bloggers.

As soon as we arrived, London Drugs got down to business and handed us an empty goody bag to hold all of the amazing samples from the beauty vendors who set up booths at the event.

For the next couple of hours, I was lucky enough to check out each brand’s booth and discover what we’ll be seeing on London Drugs’ shelves in the next few months.

I know all of you love to read about products that are launching soon, so I can’t wait to share some of the highlights from the #LDBeauty 2016 Beauty Collection (stay tuned for more in future posts).

The bottom line is that the next few months of beauty are looking good🙂.

Makeup

I’m already a big fan of NYX Cosmetics so I was pumped to check out the latest from their professional makeup line. The products in their latest launch have a bit of an edge like their gradient Ombré Blush, inspired by the ombré trend.

There’s also a slew of vibrant Soft Matte Lip Creams including a Vancouver shade (woo hoo!), which is an amazing deep purple color.

Scale Down Your Beauty Routine: The Everything Balm

19 May

Del_EBalm

Who doesn’t love multipurpose beauty products? Not only do they speed up your beauty routine, they also free up valuable real estate on your bathroom counter🙂.

Cake Beauty has taken multipurpose to the next level. They’ve just launched the Delectable Everything Balm, a sheer beauty balm designed to hydrate, smooth, and condition just about everything from stray hairs to dry cuticles.

The key ingredient in this beauty balm is castor oil, which has been used for thousands of years as a high-performance beauty treatment due to its deep penetrating properties. To add even more moisture, the balm also contains shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter, and sunflower seed oil.

I had a chance to sample this cruelty free and vegan balm this week. One of my favorite features is that the balm comes in a tube (instead of a sticky jar) with an easy-dispensing pump.

The pump releases a small amount of the balm that you can apply directly to the area you want to treat or the palm of your hand. Using a tube also means you’ll avoid tracking in dirt and germs.

21+ Uses of the Everything Balm

For those of us who want to get out of the door faster, Cake Beauty has discovered 21+ innovative uses of The Everything Balm.

Here are my top five favorites uses:

1-Plumps lips.

2-Tames eyebrows.

3-Pops cheekbones.

4-Smooths frizz.

5-Extends your fragrance!

If you want to be ready for any beauty emergency, store one of these pretty pink tubes in your handbag and you’re good to go!

Serious Frizz Tamer: Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer

10 Mar

Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Primer

If you have coarse or processed hair, you probably are a member of the same club that I belong to: the Frizzy Follicles club.

My main complaint with anti-frizz products is that results don’t seem to last.

I recently have been trying a Bumble and bumble product with good results that have staying power.

The Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer is a multitasking primer with six different oils designed to make hair smoother and silkier. It also protects against breakage from UV rays and heat (which I am guilty of frequently using).

Multitasking Haircare: PARLOR by Jeff Chastain

23 Oct

Parlor by Jeff Chastain

Jeff Chastain is a NYC celebrity hairstylist with over 14 years of experience.

Of course, you want to know who some of his amazing celebrity clients are. They include Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Kerry Washington, and RHONY Kristen Taekman.

If that’s not enough, other celebrity clients that you may have heard of are Sarah Jessica Parker and  Keri Russell. Ttwo of my favorite binge-watching series just happen to be Sex and the City and Felicity (Team Aidan/Team Ben!).

Clients loved Chastain’s signature practice of “product cocktailing”so much that he created PARLOR by Jeff Chastain with the help of Birchbox.

If you’ve been thinking that hair products are getting too complicated, you may want to check out this haircare line. You don’t need a chemistry degree to figure out how to use PARLOR by Jeff Chastain because the line features easy-to-use formulas.

Since the products are designed to work together, they all have the same unisex fragrance: ripe peach, fresh-cut grass, and white woods. For example, if you apply the Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray after shampooing and conditioning to get beachy waves, you won’t smell like a department store fragrance counter.

Birchbox Positive Force

I recently attended a Birchbox event introducing Vancouver beauty bloggers to PARLOR by Jeff Chastain haircare (more about this haircare line here).

To help educate bloggers about Birchbox, we all received the October 2015 edition of Birchbox’s subscription beauty box, Positive Force.

This month’s theme focuses on the power of beauty to change your mood, inspire confidence, and make you happy (beauty samples definitely make me happy). Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, Birchbox is also partnering with the Look Good, Feel Better Foundation.

What You Get

Here are the products you’ll receive in the Positive Force beauty box:

Canada’s First Drybar Opens in Vancouver

22 Sep

Drybar

Hey, Vancouver beauties. Have you checked out Nordstrom on Robson Street yet?

I was there for the outdoor beauty bash and opening last week, and it was a blast! Even though the store was super crowded, I did get a good look at Drybar Pacific Centre on the first floor in the cosmetics section.

If you’re not familiar with Drybar, it’s a premium blow dry bar that originated in L.A. It’s expanded all over the U.S. and has made its way up to Canada: first stop in Vancouver!

In addition to a full range of blowouts, you can also get scalp massages and hydrating treatments if your hair is on the dry side.

What I like about Drybar is that they offer a full selection of products to up your “blowout game” at home.

Cezanne Perfect kerating Smoothing Treatment

Kiss Frizzy Hair G’Bye

If you have curly or frizzy hair, forget about wavy bobs or lobs. What you want to know is: “How can I gently and effectively smooth out my curls?”

The latest smoothing system that my hair stylist is raving about is called the Cezanne Perfect Finish Keratin Smoothing Treatment. The treatment zaps unwanted frizzies and makes hair shiny without turning it too straight or flat.

Lindsay Lecker is a master stylist at Simon’s Hair Salon in Vancouver. She’s been working with the Cezanne smoothing treatment since it came on the hair scene. As you can see the by the photos of Lindsay’s client, the results are amazing.
