Blushes for All Occasions

22 Sep

allblushes

What are the latest ways to wear blush? It depends on your makeup look.

For example, if you’re going for a natural look, you may want to apply a pop of pink blush for a hint of rosy cheeks.

When it comes to blush, one size does not fit all. So, here are a few of my favourite blushes that I wear for different occasions.

H&M Pure Radiant Powder Blusher

Wow, this blush was quite a find! It’s a soft, sheer powder that leaves a rosy, healthy-looking glow. I apply the Pale Pink shade when I want my cheeks to have minimal color but a just flushed appearance.

MAC Mineralize Blush

This sheer blush with baked minerals is my every day blush. I can’t give enough love to the Dainty shade because it’s amazing.  It brightens your face and works whether you want to match pink or peach-based lip and eye makeup.

Too Faced Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush

If you’re looking for a bit of drama, a super easy way to get there is with the Too Faced Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush. This trio palette is a baked, heart-shaped blush with dimensional color. Whether I apply one shade to a certain area or swirl the colors together, the baked color formula is always good for creating a buildable finish.

Smart Illumination: NYX Strobe of Genius

19 Sep

NYX Strobe of Genius

If you weren’t born with it, one way to capture the “glowy” skin look is with an illuminating palette that helps to create depth and dimension with light.

The Strobe of Genius palette from NYX Cosmetics comes with seven versatile shades to master the art of strobing (or highlighting).

Even though the palette looks like an explosion of shimmer, the shades are surprisingly soft and flattering without leaving a heavy finish.

The palette contains cool and warm tones that go beyond basic white and pink, including:

  • Top Row: Gold, champagne, lilac, rose gold (cool)
  • Bottom Row: Copper, bronze, ivory (warm)

If you’re keen on strobing through the fall, this could be your go to kit with so many possibilities (plus you can use the shades as eye shadow, bronzer, or blush).

Trend Alert: Dark Lips for Fall

1 Sep

Dark Lips Trend

Hello beauties!

Have you been wondering what the new makeup trends are this fall season?

Dark lips dominated the Fall 2016 runway shows earlier this year, so it’s not surprising that darker lips are trending right now as an early fall favorite.

If you’ve started the dark lips party earlier in the year, the good news is you can take this trend right into the fall and winter.

Here are a few dark lip shades to get you started (starting in the upper left corner of the photo).

Maybelline New York Lip Studio Color Jolt

The Lip Studio Color Jolt is a shiny lip paint that packs a powerful pop of color with eight times more pigment than a traditional gloss in every drop.

You can build the creamy, long-lasting color for more vibrancy or customize your own look. The shade in the photo is called Berry Naughty, a deep blue red, which is a classic for fall.

NYX Cosmic Metals Lip Cream

The Cosmic Metals Lip Cream is a creamy smooth gloss with a glistening metallic finish. The Asteroid Aura shade is an “out of this world” magenta with silver shimmer.

Annabelle Twist Up Metallic Retractable Lipstick Crayon

The Twist Up Metallic Lipstick Crayon has a creamy texture that hydrates and smoothes for an anti-drying effect (yes!).

If you like a true red with a touch of sparkles, the Heartbreaker shade is for you.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick

The Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick is a waterproof liquid lipstick with a velvety matte finish.

The Sandstorm shade is a trendy brownish nude that Elle magazine listed as a dupe for the Dolce K shade in the Kylie Jenner Lip Kit.

Maybelline New York Color Sensational The Loaded Bolds

The Loaded Bolds lipstick features a hyper-pigmented formula that provides goth-inspired depth with a single stroke courtesy of non-drying Kaolin clay base.

The Midnight Merlot shade is a dark burgundy with cool undertones. Drink up!

Which dark lipstick will you be wearing this fall?

Makeup with Benefits: Almay Age Essentials Collection

4 Aug

Almary Age Essentials

When it comes to makeup with benefits like collagen, hyaluronic acid, and peptides, count me in.

Almay has recently launched their Age Essentials collection with these skin-loving ingredients and SPF, including:

  • Almay Age Essentials Makeup
  • Almay Age Essentials Concealer
  • Almay Age Essentials Lip Treatment

Almay Age Essentials Makeup

I’m a hard-core powder foundation fan, but I try to be open to alternatives🙂. Almay’s foundation with built-in moisturizer is lightweight and blends well (the Light Neutral shade was a good match for my pale skin tone).

Even though the SPF 15 foundation has a matte finish, it still made my skin look moisturized all day. In fact, the foundation is designed to boost hydration immediately and over time.

Almay Age Essentials Concealer

Some multi-purpose concealers work well for one issue but are a total fail for another. For example, you may find that a concealer does a good job hiding dark circles, but it leaves buildup over the day in your lines and creases.

With its creamy texture, Almay Age Essentials Concealer with SPF 20 camouflages darkness and subtly brightens under the eyes (without creasing). The easy-to-use stick format with a slanted tip provides good coverage and comes in shades from light to medium deep.

What’s in My Bag: Favorite Makeup Minis

1 Aug

Favorite Makeup Minis

Like many beauty bloggers, I’ve accumulated a lot of makeup🙂.

When containers start to overflow, it’s time for a “reorg” to refresh my memory as to what I have and decide what needs to go.

During a recent organizing session, I came across a stash of makeup minis.

Instead of storing them separately (in my usual haphazard fashion), I’ve decided to pack these favorite minis in a cosmetic bag so they’re travel or work-ready.

Benefit “That Gal Brightening Face Primer”

If you want to brighten up your skin before applying foundation, Benefit’s lightweight pink primer makes skin look more awake.

Diorshow Mascara

This Dior mascara with its microfiber formula is legendary for its lash-lengthening effect. I like the thick wand for building lashes with a lot of volume.

Shiseido Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate

This unique serum defends skin against the environment and daily damage. Shiseido spent 20 years studying skin immunity before it developed a blend of ingredients that boosts the defensive functions of skin cells.

Buxom Full-on Lip Stick

I’m a big fan of all Buxom lip products. Although you can apply this lip-pumping lipstick in Brooklyn all over the lip area, I use it as a lip liner because of its creamy texture.

Bobbi Brown High Shimmer Lip Gloss

This lip gloss comes in the Bellini Mini Lip & Eye Palette. This shade called Bellini is a nude pink with a pearlescent finish. What can I say: it’s Bobbi Brown ❤️.

High-Impact Color and Shine: New Maybelline Lip Launches

18 Jul

MaybellineNYLips

Good morning, beauties. How is your summer going so far?

This is a great time of year for new makeup releases. If you want to step up your lip game, Maybelline has introduced some new lip lines:

  • Maybelline New York Lip Studio Color Jolt
  • Maybelline Lip Studio Shine Shot
  • Maybelline New York Color Sensational The Loaded Bolds

I was lucky enough to have a sneak peek at these new lip launches. Overall, it looks like deep, bold colors are in so you may have to do some soul-searching to find your inner goth🙂.

No worries, though, if you’re a fan of nude shades. The latest twist on nude is a modern brown shade (à la K. Jenner).

Maybelline New York Lip Studio Color Jolt

The Lip Studio Color Jolt is a shiny lip paint that packs a powerful pop of color with eight times more pigment than a traditional gloss in every drop. The applicator is a flocked tip which helps for precise application.

You can build the creamy, long-lasting color for more vibrancy or customize your own look by layering a couple of shades.

Lip Color Jolt is available in eight shades:

  • Stripped Down (my fave)
  • Never Bare
  • Fight Me Fuschia
  • Orange Outburst
  • Talk Back Red
  • Red-dy Or Not
  • Berry Naughty
  • Violet Rebel

Maybelline New York Lip Studio Shine Shot

If glossy lips are your thing, Lip Studio Shine Shots create a mirror-like effect in a wax-free formula. Think of this gloss like a top coat for your nails: it adds a bit of shine to a matte finish and helps the color last.

The Lip Studio Shine Shots come in two shades: Glassy Shine Lip Topcoat (clear) and Prismatic Lip Topcoat (rose gold with a metallic sheen) which shines like a diamond 💎.

TIP: For a plumping effect, dot the Lip Topcoat in the middle of your lips as a 3D highlight.

Maybelline New York Color Sensational The Loaded Bolds

The Loaded Bolds is Maybelline’s boldest lipstick collection yet. The lipstick features a hyper-pigmented, runway-inspired formula that provides depth with a single stroke courtesy of non-drying Kaolin clay base.

The 12 shades in this line cover the entire color spectrum from vibrant pinks to bright berries to modern nudes (there’s even a color-popping blue):

Beauty Classics That Never Go Out of Style

11 Jul

Beauty Classics

Do you ever wonder why some beauty products stick around forever, while others just fade away?

Beauty products become best sellers when they work well whether you’re a celebrity, a hair or makeup professional, or a regular beauty junkie. Beauty products also create a loyal customer base when stocking up on them won’t break the bank.

Here are a few cult favorites I’ve come across.

L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hair Spray

This beauty classic is the hairspray of choice for professional stylists for runways and red carpets. It comes in many variations now from Extra Strong to Colour Treated.

When I want to lock in a hairstyle and make it last as I traverse the rainforest of Vancouver🙂, I always turn to Elnett (especially the travel size).

Nivea Creme

One of my sweetest childhood memories of my late mother was watching her carefully remove her makeup with Nivea Creme. This timeless beauty classic goes back even further with fans like Marilyn Monroe, who loved it because of its rich and creamy texture.

What’s interesting now is that Nivea is tapped as a dupe for one of the most expensive luxury creams in the world: Crème de la Mer.

Benefit High Beam Liquid Face Highlighter

Benefit’s High Beam Face Highlighter is the first highlighter I ever encountered. Until then, I was familiar with contouring but not using light to accent parts of the face.

IMHO, Benefit’s High Beam highlighter started the whole highlighting craze. Even with all the competition in the HAC market, this satiny pink liquid is still one of my favorites because a little goes a long way.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

Is it just me or is using Maybelline Great Lash Mascara a rite of beauty passage? I remember using this mascara (in blue) as a tween and sneaking out of the house so no one would notice🙂.

Now, I use the colorless version to seal my mascara and prevent flakes. For me, it comes in handy when I work on site (I’m a contract technical writer), and I’m unable to check my makeup all day.

Pretty Palettes from Revlon

4 Jul

New Revlon Palettes

Happy July, beauties ❤️.

When it comes to drugstore brands, Revlon is stepping up their game with recent launches like the moisturizing Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor.

This month, Revlon is introducing a neutral eye makeup palette and all-in one palette:

  • Not Just Nudes
  • Eyes, Cheeks + Lips Palette

I was lucky enough to take a look at these palettes before they hit the shelves. (If you live in the U.S., you may have already seen these palettes at your favorite drugstore.)

Not Just Nudes

You can never have too many nude eye shadow palettes, and Revlon’s ColorStay Not Just Nudes Palette is another palette to add to your neutrals collection.

The Passionate Nudes version contains ten warm neutrals in matte and shimmering finishes, ranging from beige to mocha. Even though the palette is on the slim side, I love that the pans of shadow are still large.

The ColorStay formula is long-lasting and lets you blend the wearable shadows without creasing, fading, or smudging. Tip: If you apply an eye primer, you can make the shadow last even longer.

Kudos to Revlon for including a professional style dual-ended brush with this palette. You can use this brush to apply eye shadow in two ways:

  • Use the flat side to apply eye shadow exactly where you want it.
  • Use the round side of the brush for contouring and blending.

Eyes, Cheeks + Lips Palette

Whether you’re running late for work or heading out for vacation, Revlon has managed to include everything you need for a finished makeup look in one convenient palette:

  • 6 eye shadows
  • 1 blush
  • 2 lipsticks
  • 2 lip glosses
  • Mini applicators and a mirror

The six ColorStay eye shadows in the palette include matte and shimmery shades in bronze, taupe, purple, and chestnut colors. The shadows are on the sheer side but still blendable whether you want to create a natural or more dramatic look.

The peachy blush matches well with the neutral lipsticks and lip glosses.
